There are now 100 ways to celebrate April, which if you didn’t know, is National Grilled Cheese Month. For a mere $100, you can be the proud owner of the ultimate sandwich – the Zillion Dollar Grilled Cheese – currently being served at deca Restaurant + Bar, located at The Ritz-Carlton Chicago, A Four Seasons Hotel.
“I just wanted to create the most over-the-top grilled cheese sandwich I could. I didn’t want a mediocre sandwich you could get anywhere,” Executive Sous Chef Jon Hudak explains. “I wanted to make something special and unique for our guests that would have the ultimate ‘WOW’ factor.”
And he did just that. The Zillion Dollar Grilled Cheese is not your everyday cheese and tomato sandwich, but a one-of-a-kind experience (with of course some serious wow factor). The sandwich is enveloped in artisan country sourdough bread, and cooked until golden brown in Laudemio Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi EVOO. Layered between the bread is thinly sliced black Iberico ham smothered in melted 40-year aged Wisconsin cheddar infused with 24K gold flakes. Following are the Ellis Family Farms heirloom tomatoes, lightly drizzled with 100-year-old aged balsamic vinegar, and Oregon perigord white truffle aioli. The sandwich is finished with Hudson Valley foie gras and a sunny side up duck egg, accompanied by a skillet of lobster mac… with a pound of lobster meat.
“We wanted the sandwich to have a ‘golden’ theme. We began with white truffles and white 24 karat gold in the sandwich. Next, we felt that 100-year-old balsamic vinegar is worth more than gold so we added that,” General Manager John Gurgone says. “Then… olive oil from Frescobaldi, one of the biggest names in Chianti – and finally – Black Iberico Ham, which is like Spanish Gold.”
